The Therapy Corner

Being pregnant can be joyous and overwhelming at the same time. There are probably millions of things going through your head from what is happening to my body, is the baby safe, can I do this without harming my baby, can I still work out, and this is just a few that are probably clouding your overwhelmed mind.  Reading, talking with friends and family who have gone through it and leaning on your health professionals will ease your journey through pregnancy into motherhood.  Before performing any exercises or stretches please speak with your OB/GYN, doula, or midwife to make sure it is safe for you during your pregnancy.

Benefits of stretching during pregnancy?

  • It helps to lengthen muscles in preparation for the next 10 months and for the labor itself.
  • Keeps you relaxed.
  • Reduces aches and pains in your body while it is undergoing changes.
Improves and maintains blood flow throughout the body.

The Top 3 Stretches to perform throughout your pregnancy journey…. Always listen to your body and do not push it! There should be no pain while performing any of these stretches.

1. Deep Squat:  Lower your body into a squat keeping your knees out wider.  Go to a point where it is a comfortable stretch.

2.  Childs Pose:  Make sure your knees stay out wider to allow for your growing belly!  Reach your hands forward while keep your buttocks on your heels, reach forward until you feel a stretch.

3. Pigeon Pose:  This stretch stretches your gluteals and is good for your low back.  As your belly grows, you may have to maintain a more upright posture or transition to the seated position.

This Diagnostic session allows the therapist to get a better understanding of how we can help you transform your life and help you reach your goals. This is your opportunity to express your concerns, limitations and desires. This investigative session may require you to perform a sequence of movements so that we can determine your limitations and restrictions and afterwards a discussion of whether therapy will best help you.
